introduction

A one year part-time Supervisor training is being offered to train practising psychotherapists and counsellors to work as supervisors from a spiritual perspective with individuals and groups.

This course may be considered as a post-Diploma training for the position of Supervisor, as suggested by the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) and may also be used as a training to prepare for eligibility for BAC accreditation as a supervisor. A diploma certificate will be issued on completion of the course and course requirements.

The training involves:

  • Course work, covered during the weekly meetings and weekend trainings.
  • A group supervision practicum where some experience of supervising groups is obtained as well as experience of supervising counsellors/psychotherapists on a one-to-one basis.
  • Supervision, from a transpersonal perspective, of your supervision work.
  • Completion of a written assignment.

supervisor training: the transpersonal perspective

We begin to review the transpersonal as it applies to supervision. This will include the alchemical process and the different levels or planes of consciousness. Emphasis will be placed on assessment of client issues from a transpersonal perspective. This will include:

  • Recognising the meaning of the client's current life situation and their overall purpose in life
  • Looking at the client's personality from an holistic perspective using the elements model to see what qualities need to be developed to meet their life's problems
  • Assessing a client's maturity and level of realisation
  • Transpersonal approaches and skills such as working with intuition, creative visualisation, exploring the consciousness of the client

models of supervision and special topics

This focuses on the basics of supervision, whatever philosophical perspective the supervision is based on.

1 Models of supervision
Defining supervision
The different tasks and roles of supervision
The process model of supervision (Hawkins & Shohet)
Developmental stages in the supervisee
Developing skills needed for individual and group supervision
Non-verbal, creative and body orientated methods of exploring client material
Transference and counter-transference in supervision
Values and ethics; code of practice in supervision
Contracting in supervision and managing supervision boundaries
Supervision practice in triads

2 The Spiritual Perspective in Supervision
This work focuses on the exploration of our spiritual nature through our human qualities, life challenges and intuition.

format of the supervision course

There are 30 morning sessions of two and a half hours. These sessions will be both theoretical and practical. Students give two presentations as part of their assessment. This involves supervising a member of the group and receiving feedback and supervising a group made up of members of the training group and receiving feedback.

There are four weekend trainings, two of which focus on the process of supervision and working with groups and two which look at the spiritual perspective in supervision, including the importance of the Transpersonal perspective and being heart centred with those we supervise.

weekend seminars

1 General supervisor training with Joan Wilmot

2 An experiential exploration of the Transpersonal - Angela Gruber

3 Archetypal approaches to the Masculine and Feminine Nature - Angela Gruber

4 Understanding and working with group dynamics

practical placement and supervision

As part of the training, students must over a period of one year, supervise a group for 20 two-hour sessions or equivalent (approx. 40 hours). Students will therefore either need to find a placement or be working with a supervision group.

The CCPE has an arrangement with the West London Community Counselling Service to provide trainee supervisors who will supervise psychotherapy students who work as volunteer counsellors. We also have connections with other placements who require trainee supervisors.

Students will be expected to attend group supervision at the CCPE on their group work placement once a fortnight for one and a half hours. This will be held in the afternoon following the morning training session.

Students will also be required to do 20 individual supervision sessions. Students will also need to arrange for their own individual supervision (Transpersonal orientation) to meet the needs of their regular client work, and supervision of their individual supervisees.

entry requirements

Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy or equivalent
Three years of supervised psychotherapy practice
Evidence of further training beyond the diploma level
Involvement in a spiritual path or tradition
All candidates must be currently practising psychotherapy and be in supervision with a supervisor working from the transpersonal perspective.

course requirements for the award of the supervision diploma

1 At least 85% attendance and 100% attendance at weekends.
2 Evidence of sufficient psychotherapy practice and supervision. The candidate would be seeing at least three clients per week and receiving sufficient supervision for this. The supervisor may be asked to produce a supporting letter confirming attendance and hours.
3 Evidence of supervision of other psychotherapists, including student psychotherapists, running a group and working with individual supervisees. This will be evidenced in part by:
a) Case presentation and role play on the course
b) Written submission
c) Reference from a supervisor who is supervising the candidate's supervision
d) 85% attendance at group supervision.

Candidates will be expected to supervise students in training on the Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy course on a one-to-one basis or an equivalent training.
